Day Skipper Course Overview

  • Duration: 6 days, Day Skipper course 08:30 to 15:30/16:00 daily. 
  • Price: R 9 700.00 per person (10% discount applies to group bookings) 
  • Minimum 100 nm previous offshore sailing mileage logged
  • Other costs outside Offshore Sailing Academy: R 1 950.00 SA Sailing exam fees.  SRC Radio course Approximately R 3 200.00 depending on where you do this.

For all sailing enthusiasts who wish to earn their sailing qualification to allow them to skipper their own vessel or prepare them for skippering a charter vessel on overseas sailing holidays. This course is also very popular for people looking at entering the yachting industry as a career option.

Lectures followed by sailing daily, including one night approach. 

Course Curriculum

The Day Skipper Course offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers a wide range of seamanship skills and navigation techniques. Through a combination of theory and practical lessons, participants will gain the necessary knowledge and experience to confidently navigate a yacht in familiar waters, interpret weather forecasts, handle emergency situations and master advanced sailing skills. By the end of the course, students will be fully prepared to sit the SA Sailing Day Skipper Exam with Offshore Sailing Academy.

Certification

Successful candidates will obtain two certificates:

  • SA Sailing Day Skipper’s Ticket Category C for vessels over 9 metres – for sail and power, inland and offshore, allowing you to operate a recreational vessel up to 100 tonnes or up to 25 metres in length, from sunrise to sunset, less than 15 nautical miles from home port or 25 nautical miles from home port, provided not more than 15 nautical miles from a safe haven.
  • International Certificate of Competence (ICC) – allowing you to charter overseas (*ICC – for SA citizens/residents only)

Note:

  • you will have to register and pay for the exams with SA Sailing before exams can be taken – usually at the end of the course.
  • Three South African Sailing assessments – a practical boat handling assessment; a theory exam and a navigation exam – all done with Offshore Sailing Academy on the last 2 days.

SRC Radio Operators Course

SRC Overview

We offer the SAMSA accredited VHF DSC course to enable you to obtain your SRC (Short Range Certificate) radio operator certificate, which is a requirement for any person operating a VHF DSC marine radio and is often a prerequisite qualification for other courses such as Yacht masters or Skipper training.

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Required:
    • Knowledge of Phonetic Alphabet
    •  3 x ID/Passport pictures
  • Age: 16 and older
  • Price: R 3 200.00 per person.
